Not too long after a very unpopular decision to overhaul the card system in Paladins Beta, Hi-Rez is already looking into releasing another spinoff of the popular class-based champion shooter; this time, in the form of a PVP MOBA that can only be played on mobile devices like iPhones and Android devices.
Paladins Strike would be a MOBA that takes a literal top-down approach to the hero shooter genre. Much like its console and PC shooter counterpart, Paladins Strike will have players use its card-based upgrade system to improve the various abilities and drawbacks of a particular character using a very unpopular lootbox-based system. This means that cards would be upgraded at random based on whatever card you win from the loot boxes, giving players very little control over the effectiveness of their loadouts.
Mobile games have no shortage of 5v5 PVP games in this genre. Mobile Legends was released in 2015 to critical acclaim, and boasts 10 million concurrent players. Vainglory is among one of the better looking games in the genre, also a critical success in its own right.
Paladins is entering a genre ripe with competition, but what many now consider its biggest drawback would also be what sets it apart from other MOBA on mobile devices, and that's its card system. The ability to incrementally modify things like speed, lifesteal, and the cool down of various abilities means a player can potentially taylor their experience to their unique play style, rather than form their play style around their character.
