One of the Oldest King Of Fighters News Sites is Shutting Down

One of the oldest websites covering the ins and outs of the NeoGeo franchises of SNK shuts down.
Orochinagi is a website with around 20 years of King of Fighters news and updates under its belt. It has announced recently, that it's being forced to close its doors. In its official statement on social media, the founder --who goes by the screenname Gunsmith Cats-- made the following announcement:

While Orochinagi has grown exponentially and still gets around 420,000 hits a month, it’s simply not worth the time and effort. Ad revenue is just not enough to consider quitting the daytime job.  We ran a survey earlier and users responded honestly, explaining that social networks fulfilled their information needs. People wanted websites to remain because news items were quickly lost in the feed,  however, the most important news is generally being posted by SNK themselves. Many fans go to multi game sites and notice news there, even though this KOF specific site may well have posted the same news earlier.  Orochinagi tried to become a multi game site, but I just didn’t like those games enough and the editors soon after chose their full time jobs over posting.
He then goes on to explain that there really wasn't enough news to keep the momentum of the site going, with many articles just being opinion pieces and speculation. He also mentions that a their partner site in Japan --KOF KOUCHA-- is also ending their news service.

It doesn't appear that there are any plans to end the website or forums, but the official newsfeed --ran by Gunsmith-- is not going to be updated anymore.

The End of Orochinagi Mirrors the Slow Death of Traditional News Media

Orochinagi makes an interesting observation here. More than 40 percent of adults here in the United States get their news from Facebook, rather than visiting any particular website, according to a peer-reviewed study by the Pew Research Center and the Knight Foundation. With respect to the slow decline of Mainstream news portals, the new generation of media gets most of its exposure through social media and videos on YouTube.

The decline of Orochinagi is somewhat reminiscent to the fall of one of the largest gaming news websites; GameTrailers, but the GameTrailers demise tells the story of a much larger company with paid employees that failed to adapt to the changes in the news industry. Orochinagi ended it's 20 year run because its only writer and editor (Gunsmith Cats) wanted to focus on his job and life more than the website for a change.

It's always sad to see veteran gaming sites disappear, and we here at RageFor hope to see it back in business one day.
